Happy (late) Thanksgiving and Smoothies!

Category : cooking, diy, fun, recipes

I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving! Ours was small. My mom and sister were in Tennessee visiting family and Genevieve was in Michigan with her dad, so it was just me, my boyfriend and his mom. So it was different from most years, but a nice break from the usual routine. I was really happy that I got turkey and ham bones to make stock out of! The freezer is stocked for awhile now. I skipped Black Friday shopping. I don’t do well with crowds and long lines, and I prefer to use discount sites and coupon codes and do most of my holiday shopping online.

About a month ago Genevieve noticed the blender and asked me what it was for. I told her it was for making smoothies, because I couldn’t think of anything else right then even though I have never made them before. Since then she’s asked a few times if we can make them, and yesterday we finally did.

After consulting foodgawker and becoming hopelessly overwhelmed by all the smoothie recipes, and then wondering why I can’t manage to make such a simple drink I texted my friend Alaina, who loves cooking as much as I do. She broke it down in simple terms: fruit and a bit of liquid or ice, throw in blender, blend. So easy!

I used canned fruit, because none of the fresh at the grocery store looked delicious at all. I can of peaches, half a can of pineapple and a bit of orange juice. They were delicious, and now I have dreams of making a variety of fruit smoothies to go with breakfast each morning…

Pumpkin Decorating!

Category : fun, special events

Last Saturday was my friend Alaina’s annual pumpkin decorating party. Last year she set up a station for the kids to paint pumpkins which turned into a disaster mess, so this year she got a bunch of stuff for them to glue on the pumpkins. All the kids had so much fun! They got hopped up on cupcakes, decorated the pumpkins and played all kinds of games including running though the house in single file screaming and banging on instruments….

The food was fantastic as usual. Some sort of lentil sloppy joes, a spicy tomato-chipolte sauce and baked macaroni and cheese. Dessert was spice cake and pie (I especially enjoyed the pecan apple and NEED to learn how to make it!).

It was a really great night with family and friends!

I wish I was here!

Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t been writing in all these long months! Well, actually I can because it’s been in the back of my mind that I need to, but I’ve been doing other stuff instead. I’m just going to accept that I am a sporadic blogger and try not to make myself feel too bad about it, while renewing my effort (again) to keep this thing up.

Veve’s Handmade has now been around for a year and a half! It seems like the time has went by so quickly. I’m still running my company and making soap, but this year I’m not doing any farmer’s markets and have cut back on festivals and fairs. I’ve been focusing on my online shop, which is right here and on stocking my brick & mortar locations. Veve’s in 3 stores now, Homebody Boutique, Ella’s on Drake and Young Blood Gallery & Boutique. I’m so happy to be carried in each of these stores, it’s just so exciting for strangers to be able to walk into a shop and buy my products. I’m especially grateful for Kate at Homebody. That was my first store and Kate has been a constant Veve’s supporter and I consider her a friend (that I haven’t gotten to actually meet yet!).

I’ve been spending time reflecting on business so far, figuring out if I should expand and what has worked for me so far and what hasn’t. There have been so many times I’ve wanted to quit this because of the endless amounts of work and hard choices, but I don’t see that as real option for me. I love this, and I’m so proud of myself for all that I’ve put into it. I did an event at the end of April and several people came up to me and told me they were happy I’m there because they love my products and had been wanting to buy some again. Moments like that make it all worth it.

Here’s some pictures of what me & Veve have been up to the past few months:

Eating at Xoco Twice and Ice-Skating at Millennium Park

Category : fun, restaurants

My friend Ann came to visit over Christmas. She’s from here but lives in Florida so I barely get to see her, she only comes in a few times a year to visit her parents and friends. She’s a big part of Veve’s, doing all the design work and product photography, plus thinking of ideas. So, I do get to talk to her often, but spending time together is a treat.

This visit we decided to eat at Xoco. It’s a Rick Bayless restaurant that features tortas (sandwiches) and caldos (meals in a bowl) and fresh churros. It’s fantastic! I’ve been to one of his other restaurants, Frontera, before and it was amazing too. I think the greatness of Xoco is that the menu isn’t huge, but everything is made with the finest ingredients and perfectly prepared.

We had to wait for a table for about 30 minutes, but it wasn’t bad because it was right around 6pm and it took us about that long to decide what to order anyway. We started with the salsa and guacamole, and all agreed it was the best any of us have had. I ordered a caldo, the carnitas. It’s slow-cooked pork, potato dumplings and veggies in a broth. It’s true that it’s a meal in a bowl, it was hearty and delicious! Ann and her boyfriend Josh ordered tortas, the gunthorp chicken and the pepito. They both loved them, and I tried bites and loved them too!

For dessert we had a tiny coconut and lime tres leches cake, and churros with chocolate sauce. The tres leches was very good and the churros were the best I’ve ever had. They are amazing on their own, but it’s the rich chocolate sauce that makes them exceptional. It’s thick, and a bit creamy, and packed with flavor.

It’s hard to describe how we felt when we left the restaurant. We all felt very happy and satisfied with the meal, food-drugged in a good way! It was a great meal and a great experience.

I really wanted to try the breakfast tortas, so a few weeks later me and Ve went. We split the chorizo and egg torta and churros. She had had a classic hot chocolate and I had a latte. It was as amazing as last time! We got there right before 10am, which is when they stop serving breakfast, so it wasn’t crowded at all. Throughout the meal Ve couldn’t stop talking about how good the food is!

Ve had been asking me for a few weeks to take her ice skating (I think she was inspired by D.W. on Arthur!). It’s been a few years since I went and it’s always fun, so I decided to take her to the rink at Millennium Park. She was excited about it up until she had to walk in her skates, then the day turned into a disaster. She kept complaining about not being able to walk and wanted me to carry her, which I really couldn’t do in my skates. I was hoping that once we got on the ice it would get better, but she really hated it. She kept saying, “I can’t”, and I kept telling her that it’s hard but if she practices it will get easier. I tried holding one of her hands and having her hold the rail, and holding both of her hands, neither worked. For a few brief moments she stopped being scared and was able to take little skate steps, but then she remembered that she hated it and promptly fell down. We didn’t even make it a quarter of the way around the rink!

I wanted to take her again so she wouldn’t have a bad association with ice-skating, but she doesn’t want to go. I don’t want to force her to do anything, but I also want her to know that to get good at anything you have to practice. So, maybe next year?

Dinner at American Girl Place

Category : fun, restaurants, special events

My cousin Tammy and her family came in to town the week after Christmas to visit us. Her daughter Megan is 10 and loves American Girl dolls. As a special treat they decided to go to the American Girl Store in Water Tower Place and eat dinner there, so me & Ve went too.

We took the train in and Ve loved it! She’s been on the train before but I’m not sure she remembers it. Then we walked down Michigan Avenue, stopping in stores on the way to warm up.

The store is so big! It’s 2 floors and has more dolls than I’ve ever seen at one time in my life. There’s even a salon for the dolls to get their hair done! Ve called it the “baby store”. She wanted to get one, but at 2 years I think she’s too young for a $100 doll. Luckily, Megan has 2 so she let one sit by Ve. They give you these little highchairs that hook to the table for the dolls to sit in, it’s just too adorable!

The food was really good. To start we got a plate of tiny cinnamon rolls, then an appetizer plate with fried ravioli, cheese, spinach dip, tomatoes and cucumbers. For dinner everyone had the chicken pasta. The dessert plates were so cute! Each plate had pudding with cookies crumbled on top, served in a mini flower pot with a flower sticking out, a sugar cookie and a heart-shaped piece on angel food cake.

It was a great day and we all had tons of fun. We decided to definitely go back next time they are in town.

I know I’m a bit late, but my little sister turned 21 last Thursday!

I’m almost 9 years older than her and I’ve loved watching her grow up. For so many years I had to help take care of her, it’s been great that over the past few years she’s finally turned into an adult. It’s amazing to see a child slowly grow into a wonderful person that you don’t only love, but like. She’s my best friend.

The Morton Arboretum

Category : fun

I’m so tired, today was a loooong day! We woke up this morning, got ready to go and headed straight out to pick up Jen and head to the Morton Arboretum. I’ve wanted to go there for so long and I’m so happy that today I finally did. It’s so beautiful and there is so much to see, if you like nature, and I do. Plus, it was free. I got a museum adventure pass that was good for 2 admissions.

my big girl with her backpack

First we went to the children’s garden, which is 1400 acres, and saw as much as we could before all the screaming kids got to us (don’t let that deter you, it was great!). Ve ran away from me twice, once in the maze and terrified me, so I had to yell at her in public. I’m waiting for the day to come that she understands danger! I had a stroller for her, but I think keeping her strapped in takes away part of the experience for her, and I wanted her to have a good time.

Then we headed to the west side of the park to see a really old oak tree and a lake, both were incredibly beautiful. It was hard with the little though, her legs are too short to do much hiking and she’s easily distracted by everything. I plan to go back in the fall without Ve and without bugs to explore that part of the park more. We still got to see a lot though!

We ate a lovely meal: Jen had a sweet yogurt parfait and me and Ve split an asian chicken sandwich with pasta salad that contained some of the best fresh mozzarella I’ve ever had. Jen struck up a conversation with one of the membership desk workers who started telling us about the lore of the place. Apparently Joy Morton was named from his mother’s maiden name, which was tradition, and the Joy Path is so named because he would have his driver drop him off a ways away from his house and he would walk that way home to decompress from his day before seeing his family. I would have loved to hear more, but I knew that Ve was moments away from a meltdown, which means I was moments away from a meltdown, and it was time to go home.

This is Summer

Some of my friends and I have a Food Club. We planned it as a way spend time together even with our busy schedules, and we all like to cook so it’s also a great way to expand our skills. We meet every other month and take turns hosting, the host chooses the theme and prepares the main dish, everyone else brings a side or dessert. There have been many memorable dishes, like the time I made a Rick Bayless chorizo and chihuahua cheese dip that I had recently ate and loved at Frontera Grill, and the time Matt made the best hummus that ever existed for snack and board game night. We had a Julia Child night (flattened chicken, spinach quiche, chocolate-almond cake and plenty of red wine) and everything was amazing ~ the food and the entire atmosphere of the night was perfect, even though it was snowing and about 0 degrees out. Besides the obvious greatness of eating delicious homemade food, I love just relaxing and having fun with some of my best friends.

This month we had a pool party at Rich’s parent’s house. They have a beautiful home complete with a huge in-ground pool that I go swimming in every chance I get. They are also welcoming and fun to be around, and keep a great stock of toys for the kids ♥

The menu was toasts with a goat cheese and rosemary spread, toasted turkey sandwiches with arugula and pesto, couscous salad with fresh veggies and herbs, vinegared green beans, potato salad with yogurt and my contribution, lavender lemonade and basil lemonade (lavender and basil. Notes: I used 15 lemons for both, I added a cup of sugar to the lavender because it was too tart with just the honey and the basil won by just a bit).

The day was everything that summer should be. It was crazy hot but we got to cool off in the pool. The kids ran around playing together and making up games. The food was fresh and full of seasonal produce. Lovely.
