Pumpkin Decorating!

Category : fun, special events

Last Saturday was my friend Alaina’s annual pumpkin decorating party. Last year she set up a station for the kids to paint pumpkins which turned into a disaster mess, so this year she got a bunch of stuff for them to glue on the pumpkins. All the kids had so much fun! They got hopped up on cupcakes, decorated the pumpkins and played all kinds of games including running though the house in single file screaming and banging on instruments….

The food was fantastic as usual. Some sort of lentil sloppy joes, a spicy tomato-chipolte sauce and baked macaroni and cheese. Dessert was spice cake and pie (I especially enjoyed the pecan apple and NEED to learn how to make it!).

It was a really great night with family and friends!

Happy Summer!

I wish I was here!

Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t been writing in all these long months! Well, actually I can because it’s been in the back of my mind that I need to, but I’ve been doing other stuff instead. I’m just going to accept that I am a sporadic blogger and try not to make myself feel too bad about it, while renewing my effort (again) to keep this thing up.

Veve’s Handmade has now been around for a year and a half! It seems like the time has went by so quickly. I’m still running my company and making soap, but this year I’m not doing any farmer’s markets and have cut back on festivals and fairs. I’ve been focusing on my online shop, which is right here and on stocking my brick & mortar locations. Veve’s in 3 stores now, Homebody Boutique, Ella’s on Drake and Young Blood Gallery & Boutique. I’m so happy to be carried in each of these stores, it’s just so exciting for strangers to be able to walk into a shop and buy my products. I’m especially grateful for Kate at Homebody. That was my first store and Kate has been a constant Veve’s supporter and I consider her a friend (that I haven’t gotten to actually meet yet!).

I’ve been spending time reflecting on business so far, figuring out if I should expand and what has worked for me so far and what hasn’t. There have been so many times I’ve wanted to quit this because of the endless amounts of work and hard choices, but I don’t see that as real option for me. I love this, and I’m so proud of myself for all that I’ve put into it. I did an event at the end of April and several people came up to me and told me they were happy I’m there because they love my products and had been wanting to buy some again. Moments like that make it all worth it.

Here’s some pictures of what me & Veve have been up to the past few months:

Dinner at American Girl Place

Category : fun, restaurants, special events

My cousin Tammy and her family came in to town the week after Christmas to visit us. Her daughter Megan is 10 and loves American Girl dolls. As a special treat they decided to go to the American Girl Store in Water Tower Place and eat dinner there, so me & Ve went too.

We took the train in and Ve loved it! She’s been on the train before but I’m not sure she remembers it. Then we walked down Michigan Avenue, stopping in stores on the way to warm up.

The store is so big! It’s 2 floors and has more dolls than I’ve ever seen at one time in my life. There’s even a salon for the dolls to get their hair done! Ve called it the “baby store”. She wanted to get one, but at 2 years I think she’s too young for a $100 doll. Luckily, Megan has 2 so she let one sit by Ve. They give you these little highchairs that hook to the table for the dolls to sit in, it’s just too adorable!

The food was really good. To start we got a plate of tiny cinnamon rolls, then an appetizer plate with fried ravioli, cheese, spinach dip, tomatoes and cucumbers. For dinner everyone had the chicken pasta. The dessert plates were so cute! Each plate had pudding with cookies crumbled on top, served in a mini flower pot with a flower sticking out, a sugar cookie and a heart-shaped piece on angel food cake.

It was a great day and we all had tons of fun. We decided to definitely go back next time they are in town.

I’m Back!

Category : Working, special events

Hello! I’ve missed blogging during this long break! Things got really busy for me over the holidays. I was working plus had so many Veve’s orders to get out. I got really stressed out with everything, even though of course I was happy that business was so good. I didn’t even get around to putting all my Christmas decorations up!

But things have gotten back to normal now and I’m more or less caught up on the long list of things I was behind on. So you all can expect me to be back to blogging regularly!

Are all these presents for me?

Interview with me on Creative Apples!

Category : Working, special events

A few weeks ago April from Creative Apples asked to feature me on her blog. She sent me some interview questions to fill out and send back. It was hard to answer all them! It made me nervous, of course, but I had fun and I love being featured on different blogs!

Here’s the link.

Fall Fests and Being Busy

Category : special events

Readers, I’m sorry that until today I have been neglecting this blog for the past few weeks. So much has been going on that writing has been a low priority and I’ve really missed it. I do have a whole list of posts that need to be written though, so here’s to being back!

Personally, I’ve had a lot of dental appointments for my tooth, friends in from out of town and problems in another friendship. Professionally, I’ve been getting wholesale orders (hurray!), been working fall fests and fairs and have seen an increase in my online orders.

The good thing about fall fests is that it’s not typically in the 90s. The bad thing is that many of them are outside and the weather may be bad. On the 11th and 12th of September I did Fall on the Green in Oak Lawn. Setting up Saturday morning was miserable! It wasn’t raining enough for me to not go, but it was raining enough to get wet. I was so happy when the bad weather passed and it was beautiful for the remainder of the weekend.

This past Sunday I had the Monarch Butterfly Festival at Lake Katherine. The place is just lovely. It’s a nature preserve and besides the lake there is a little waterfall and trees and flowers and small wildlife. Out of all the fairs I’ve done so far this one was probably my favorite, because of the atmosphere.

It’s tough, physically and mentally to work these events. I have to set up my tent and display and stand for long periods of time. Sometimes it’s hard to take breaks and I get hungry (and I can never seem to get around to making myself snack packs!). I am in good shape but I’m always exhausted afterwards. Mentally, it’s draining. I love meeting my customers and answering questions but after talking to 200 or so people I don’t have much left to give, it’s hard to be “on” for these long periods of time. At the Butterfly Fest my friend Alaina came to help me, and that helped a lot. Not only to give me breaks but also to have someone there for support. I’ve developed a ritual to help myself refresh afterwards: that night I get to be lazy, the next day yoga and meditation (which I am terrible at, but I am trying) and fresh healthy food. So far, it’s been working, and I have plenty more fall events to use it after!

Lollapalooza

Category : special events

When the warm weather started I planned to have adventures this summer. Nothing too thrilling, just to take advantage of the outdoor activities Chicago offers in the summer, museums and just being out and about. Oh, and to hopefully leave town at least once, for a few days. Ve is old enough this year to enjoy things and (hopefully) be on good behavior in public. It’s August already and we still haven’t done much. We’ve swam often, went to the park, went to the beach once, but I haven’t gotten in nearly all the things that I wanted to do. I’m blaming the oppressive heat. And work.

Some of my friends were going to Lollapalooza on Sunday, and at the last minute I decided to go too. I haven’t seen live music in a long time, and sometimes I really miss doing the things that I used to do before I became a mom. I’m not one of those people that gave up everything to just be a mom, but it’s true that I don’t get out nearly as much as I was able to before Ve came along. I love being her mom, but I also love taking time away from her to do my own thing.

I’m so glad I went, it was a great time! It was hot and crowded, but there is something amazing about large groups of people coming together for a purpose, even if the purpose is to listen to music and mill about in a large group of people. Grant Park is a great place to see a show at. It’s downtown Chicago, so you can see the skyline from inside the park, which just adds to the special atmosphere.

The music was great, all day. I didn’t sit and watch that many entire performances, mainly because it was hard to sit directly in the sun for a long time. We walked around and tried to hear almost everyone, and took lots of breaks in the shade. I had been looking forward to MGMT, but thought their performance was lackluster. We listened to some of Flosstradamus on the DJ stage and they were great, I wanted to dance but it was too hot. The Arcade Fire was amazing, they sounded great and brought enough energy to the show to send it out into the crowd. I always wonder how some performers can do that, what it is about them that enables them to get up there in front of so many people and really put it out there. It’s a beautiful thing.

I had so much fun, and hopefully I will be inspired to get in some more fun stuff before the nice weather ends!

Speaking to an herb guild and Beverly Arts Feast

Category : diy, recipes, special events

I’ve had a really busy week. Besides my regular farmer’s markets I was able to participate in 2 special events in the past week. An herb guild invited me to speak on Thursday evening, and Sunday I had the Beverly Arts Feast.

I met a member of the herb guild about a month ago at the Homer Glen Farmer’s Market. She had asked me if I would be interested in coming to speak about soap-making to them, and to set up my products so the members could have a private shopping event. It’s different from the work I usually do, but I thought it would be a fun experience and give me the opportunity to meet some new people. I was nervous, I’ve never talked about what I do to more than a few people at a time, but I’m glad I did it. The group was really great, they were interested in my products and asked good questions. Just for fun, I decided to make a garden’s scrub out of pantry ingredients to demonstrate to them, and to teach them something they can easily do at home. I ended up having fun and hope to do it again some day.

Easy Garden’s Scrub with Lavender

1 Tablespoon any kind of sugar
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 Tablespoon dried lavender (crushed)
1 squirt honey

a lavender field

I only found out about the Beverly Arts Feast a week before the event. I met a lady at the Oak Lawn Farmer’s Market, she passed my card along to her friend who is one of the organizers, who called me to invite me to participate. So it was a bit last minute to prepare, but I didn’t want to miss what proved to be a great event. Beverly is a really nice neighborhood in Chicago, there are beautiful old homes there and a cute little downtown area with shops and galleries. The fest was so nice, there were quality vendors, live music and bunches of great food! If you’re ever in the area, eat at Cafe 103, delicious! Luckily, the day was finally not crazy hot like it has been recently and bunches of people came out and many of them bought my products ♥ My friend Luz lives in the area and came out and ended up helping me all day. She’s a great salesperson, I don’t know how she did it, but I’m sure that my sales were higher because she has a magic way of framing my products to potential clients. I also got to meet Luz’s friend Erin, who was there giving massages. She offers yoga classes on Sunday mornings that I want to attend soon.

taking a break with mini gelato cones

I was exhausted after all of it, for days I didn’t have a chance to rest or get much done at home besides make product, but I’m glad for all of it. I met new people and introduced them to Veve’s Handmade and had fun!
